The most common form of external plastering is the application of a sand and cement mixture applied directly to brick or block work surfaces. The process is widely known as rendering and is a two coat process. A first coat is applied to the surface called a scratch coat and is most commonly applied by hand but can also be applied by machine. As the first coat is hardening a series of lines are scratched into the surface which then acts as a key to receive the second coat of sand and cement the following day. The second coat of render is then applied the following day and is then ruled flat and allowed to set slightly until the surface is ready to be rubbed smooth by hand with the use of a plasterers tool known as a float. During this process any imperfections are filled and the surface begins to appear flat and smooth with a very slightly textured finish. Once the floating process is complete a damp sponge is then very lightly rubbed in a circular motion to complete the smooth appearance of the newly completed surface. Other finishes can then be applied onto the render to create different styles and finishes if required and these include stippled finishes known as tyrolean or high build for example. Another common type of exterior finish is pebble and spar dashing.

Interior plastering may be carried out for numerous reasons, new buildings require a finish to be applied to the new walls, alterations and extensions may be undertaken and old buildings may require major refurbishment. If the building is listed then it is likely that the repairs and renovations will have to be carried out under the guidance of the local conservation and planning departments using traditional materials. Various materials may be utilised on interior walls and ceilings the most common being gypsum based plasterboard.
